Ingredients
  

  • 1 ¾ cups unbleached all-purpose flour 8 ¾ ounces/248 grams
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 14 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 ¾ sticks
  • ½ cup granulated sugar 3 ½ ounces/99 grams
  • ¾ cups packed dark brown sugar 5 ¼ ounces/149 grams
  • 1 teaspoon table salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 ¼ cups semisweet chocolate chips or chunks
  • ¾ cup chopped pecans or walnuts toasted (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Whisk together flour and baking soda in a bowl.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook until browned, then transfer to a mixing bowl.
  • Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, and vanilla to the butter. Mix until smooth.
  • Beat in the egg and egg yolk until well combined.
  • Gradually add the flour mixture, mixing until just incorporated.
  • Fold in chocolate chips and nuts (if using).
  • Drop dough by tablespoons onto prepared baking sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are golden but centers are soft.
  • Cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.

Notes

  • Dark brown sugar adds deeper flavor, but light brown sugar works too.
  • Toasting nuts enhances their flavor.
  • Dough can be chilled for thicker cookies.
