Spicy Voodoo Shrimp

Ingredients
  

For the Shrimp

  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 1 stalk celery, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 cup chicken or seafood stock
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce adjust to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For Garnish and Serving

  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • lemon wedges
  • cooked white rice, grits, or crusty bread

Instructions
 

  • Season the shrimp with Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper.
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until pink. Remove and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt butter with olive oil. Add onion, bell pepper, and celery. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Add garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, cayenne, thyme, and oregano. Cook for 2 minutes.
  • Pour in stock and hot sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  • Return the shrimp to the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  • Garnish with parsley and serve with lemon wedges, rice, grits, or bread.

Notes

Adjust the amount of hot sauce and cayenne to your preferred spice level.
