Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Skillet

Ingredients

For the Batter

  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg for warm spice notes
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon freshly ground preferred
  • 2 tablespoon dark rum optional but recommended for authentic eggnog flavor
  • 1.5 cups eggnog for rich, creamy flavor

For the French Toast

  • 1 loaf crusty country-style bread cut into ¾-inch thick slices
  • 3 tablespoon unsalted butter I use Kerrygold for rich flavor

For Serving

  • whipped cream freshly whipped adds best texture
  • maple syrup

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and dark rum until well combined.
  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Dip each slice of bread into the batter, allowing it to soak briefly, then place it in the skillet. Cook until golden brown on both sides.
  • Serve the French toast warm with whipped cream and maple syrup.

Notes

You can adjust the amount of rum based on your preference. This dish pairs well with fresh fruit as a garnish.
