Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 large eggs

Substitutions and Add-Ins:

  • Use Greek yogurt thinned with milk if you don’t have buttermilk.
  • Try Monterey Jack gouda, or pepper jack for a different flavor.
  • Add chopped jalapeños olives, or sun-dried tomatoes for a twist.

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and lightly flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, garlic powder, oregano, and thyme.

Step 3: Add the Cheese

  • Stir in the cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan until evenly distributed in the flour mixture.
  • Tip: Tossing the cheese in the flour helps keep it from sinking.

Step 4: Combine Wet Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, melted butter, and eggs until smooth.

Step 5: Mix Together

  • Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Gently fold until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Tip: The batter will be thick. Stir just until no dry streaks remain.

Step 6: Bake

  • Transfer the batter to the prepared loaf pan. Smooth the top.
  • Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the top is golden brown.

Step 7: Cool and Slice

  • Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Tip: Letting it cool completely makes slicing much easier.

Notes

  • Cool Completely Before Slicing: Prevents crumbling and helps texture set.
  • Don’t Overmix: Mix just until combined for a tender crumb.
  • Freshly Grated Cheese: Melts better than pre-shredded.
  • Add a Topping: Sprinkle extra cheese on top before baking for a cheesy crust.
