Ingredients
  

For the Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups unsweetened applesauce

For the Frosting

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk optional, for desired consistency

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a baking pan.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  • In another bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Add eggs and vanilla, mixing well.
  • Stir in the applesauce. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until just combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • For the frosting, beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Add milk if needed for consistency.
  • Once the cake has cooled, spread the frosting on top and serve.

Notes

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
