- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 14 tablespoons unsalted butter (1 ¾ sticks)
- ½ cup granulated sugar (3 ½ ounces/99 grams)
- ¾ cups packed dark brown sugar (5 ¼ ounces/149 grams)
- 1 teaspoon table salt
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 ¼ cups semisweet chocolate chips or chunks
- ¾ cup chopped pecans or walnuts, toasted (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Whisk together flour and baking soda in a bowl.
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook until browned, then transfer to a mixing bowl.
- Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, and vanilla to the butter. Mix until smooth.
- Beat in the egg and egg yolk until well combined.
- Gradually add the flour mixture, mixing until just incorporated.
- Fold in chocolate chips and nuts (if using).
- Drop dough by tablespoons onto prepared baking sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are golden but centers are soft.
- Cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.
Notes
- Dark brown sugar adds deeper flavor, but light brown sugar works too.
- Toasting nuts enhances their flavor.
- Dough can be chilled for thicker cookies.
